Contact Bernd
Bernd Haupt has been a member of the Penn State community since January 1999. He earned his Ph.D. from Kiel University, Germany, in Oceanography, marine Geology, and Meteorology. He has sailed on numerous research expeditions worldwide, including the North Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic Sea, South China Sea, and Mediterranean. Bernd has published extensively and co-edited the book “The Oceans and Rapid Climate Change: Past, Present, and Future.”
Bernd has served on numerous proposal-writing teams and secured significant external funding to support his research. His expertise in programming, numerical ocean and climate modeling, GIS, and CadnaA has benefited researchers and students within EMS and across the broader academic community. Over the past decades, he has collaborated extensively with faculty at Penn State’s Institutes of Energy and the Environment on projects such as the FEMA Flood Risk Tool for Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access (PASDA), and the Penn State Data Commons. These projects span research, outreach, and teaching, including the development of geospatial analysis tools and GIS map services for NOAA/NWS climate data, as well as USGS-funded initiatives to create public visualization and analysis tools for the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Estuary, and the FAA NoiseQuest program. Their overarching goals are to advance regional scientific research, educate students and the public about estuaries and oceans, and support teaching.
